What is a childhood memory that still haunts you?

I'm not sure when exactly this happened although I'm pretty sure I was still in elementary school.  Anyway, I was home one night with my sister and it must have been summer since we were watching TV in the dark when she changed the channel to "COPS" or some similar show.  I kept telling her to change the channel but she didn't and they ended up showing surveillance video of a guy working at an electronics store being robbed.  Which wasn't bad except for the fact that the people robbing him slit his throat.  And this being "COPS"/"America's Most Wanted"/whatever, they showed it again - with the 911 call this time.  My sister didn't change the channel until my mom finally yelled at her.  It doesn't seem that bad now (especially considering all the gory movies I watch) but at the time I was a little freaked out.  It certainly made enough of an impression on me that I still remember it today.

Share a recipe for your favorite summer drink.

It's not an alcoholic drink but this is a great drink to have when you need to cool down from the heat.

Orange Cow


Ingredients
2 cups vanilla ice cream
6 oz. frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed (also works well with grape juice or probably any other juice concentrate)
1 1/2 cups milk

Instructions
Soften vanilla ice cream at room temperature
Use a blender.  Carefully put in orange juice concentrate; add milk.  Spoon in ice cream.  Blend until smooth.

Makes 4 cups.

I've been making this drink for about 10 years now and it continues to be a family favorite.  My family always has orange juice concentrate in the house so we end up making this a lot during the summer.

Which cultural festivals will you be attending this summer?

Well I don't know if I would consider them "cultural" festivals but I usually try to go to the Edmonds Art Festival, Bite of Seattle, Bellevue Art Festival, and the Taste of Edmonds.  Some years I'll end up being downtown the same weekend as Hemp Fest but I've never wandered around it.  I feel like there's some other festival I usually go to but I can't think of it now.

That would be my copy of "The Little House on the Prairie" series.  (Not the copies pictured.)  They were printed in 1971 but are reprints of the 1953 printing.  I think we got them used from our local library since they have stickers with "FPK" on them.  One of them is missing the front cover (including the page that says "don't buy this book if the cover is missing") and three of them have pages falling out.  I am missing one of the books in the series so I should really get around to finding a copy of it one of these days.  Good series though; one of my favorites as a kid.

What are your neighbors like? (The ones you live near or next to, not the ones in your Vox neighborhood!)

Even though I'm currently working across the hall from my neighbor (although I'm not sure she knows that), I don't know much about them.  I know the husband smokes, they have 2 kids (but they may or may not be step-kids to one of the parents), and they quite possibly have one of the dumbest dogs ever.  Nevertheless, they're still a slight improvement over the last few people who have lived there.  The people who lived there when I was a baby broke into our house and stole money & jewelry from us and the older son of the most recent people to live there would stand in the window facing our computer room wearing a long, black coat & sunglasses and just stare into our house.  It was a little creepy.  (I think they eventually sent him off to military school in Ohio or something.)

What are your travel plans for this spring/summer?

Right now, unless I have a job/interview at the time, I'm planning on going to Anaheim with my mom in July.  She as a conference and/or reunion down there and we're planning on hitting Disneyland while we're there.

I'm also planning on moving from my parents' house to my own apartment this summer.  That counts as travel, right?

What's your favorite thing about being sick?

This QotD is a little psychic because I was going to write up a post about how I'm mad that the 8th graders I teach got me sick for Spring Break.

Anyway, I don't have a favorite thing about being sick.  My throat hurts, my nose runs, and my face gets raw from blowing my nose so much.  The only good thing about being sick this week is that I don't really have to go anywhere.  Except on Thursday - I hope this cold is (mostly) over by then.

Wham! - Careless Whisper
Well, it was the top single for the year I was born - I couldn't get Billboard to show me the week/month I was born.  Apparently Wham! was very popular the year I was born since they had 2 singles in the top 5 of the top 100.  This song even beat out "Like a Virgin" for the top spot.
