A few weeks ago my mom flew to Sacramento and, according to her, on the way there she sat next to the father of the bass player for Death Cab for Cutie.  Now, I know my mom and if she's ever heard of Death Cab for Cutie it's because I mentioned them once or twice around her so I'm trying to figure out how him being the father of the bass player in Death Cab for Cutie came up in conversation.  Does he go around introducing himself as the father of the bass player in Death Cab for Cutie?  Apparently he also mentioned that his son is spending/saving the money he gets from being in Death Cab for Cutie wisely (i.e., he's not "blowing it" according to my mom).  Once again I'm trying to figure out how this came up in conversation.  Sure my mom can strike up a conversation with almost anyone but I'm still wondering how she got these pieces of information out of him.  They just don't seem like things that would come up in a normal conversation.  Especially since my mom knows almost nothing about the music I listen to.
