Loathe:
- Due dates that come out of nowhere
- Rain
- Slow computers
- Being criticized (even if it does help me become a better teacher)
- Not having time to go see movies in the theater
- Potential 70 degree weather (it better be sunny & 70 tomorrow)
- A student telling me she's disappointed she's going to miss my class tomorrow after she heard what we're going to do
- Pizza
- Some of my favorite TV shows being renewed for next season
- The U District street fair (I hope the weather is nice)
I know it's nowhere near Talk Like a Pirate Day but I couldn't resist - and I'm bored.
My family and I went downtown today to see the Roman sculptures from the Louvre before they left (and to go to Pike Place Market) and stumbled on the Seattle Maritime Festival.
The festival basically consisted of a bunch of tugboats on the water (we didn't stick around for the tugboat races), boat building contest, and free harbour cruises (for the first 400 people - which we were not).
There was even a mock Coast Guard rescue.
I wish the weather had been nicer (read: sunnier) but it's Seattle so you take what you can get. Next weekend is the U District Street Fair and I'm hoping not only does the 70-degree weather they're predicting for later in the week actually happen but that it sticks around through Sunday.
Loathe:
- Losing my voice
- Getting a bloody nose
- Being disappointed by new episodes of shows that have been gone since December
- Not being able to teach since I can't talk
Love:
- Accepting a job (at least I really, really hope I signed under "accept")
- Changing almost $20 worth of coins into an Amazon.com gift e-certificate
- The accomplished feeling I got after breaking up my first fight
- Surfing YouTube for random videos
Maggie's 90s Music Monday post combined with ripping a bunch of CDs this weekend caused me to search YouTube for random/obscure/forgotten 90s songs. It was a surprisingly successful search.
"On My Own" by Peach Union:
"Ready to Go" by Republica:
"Kiss the Rain" by Billie Myers:
(I admit it, I still listen to my Peach Union and Billie Myers CDs. Although I can't quite remember where I heard of Peach Union or why I bought their "Audiopeach" CD.)
Actually, right now, it's more like can't speak.
My fever may have passed Thursday but now my sore throat is starting to impair my job. It was horrible; for most of the day I sounded like a teenage boy whose voice was changing. In 6th period I got the students to do things for me by promising to whisper if they did. (My whispers came out like squeaks which greatly amused them.) I spent an extra half-hour after school today making copies of back-up worksheets in case I really don't have a voice tomorrow and can't verbally teach the new unit. I wish I could take a sick day but since I've already missed 2 days and we get Memorial Day off, I'm down to exactly 52 days of student teaching - which is the minimum amount we're supposed to do. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to stay silent for most of the day and only speak when absolutely necessary. Oh, and try not to yell over my students too much.
Well, it wasn't quite 103 degrees but at its peak my fever reached 101.1 degrees. So I'm staying home from school today. Unfortunately, today was supposed to be the day of my mid-term evaluation so now we're trying to figure out when that's going to happen. What makes it even worse is that as I was driving home from school this morning, my fever broke. Which means I probably could have stayed and just pushed through the day. Oh well. It is kind of nice to have a day off. (Except for the sore muscles and throat.)

Jaime tagged me and I don't really feel like grading papers right now so here it goes.
- Each player starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves.
- People who are tagged, write a blog post about their own 8 random things, and post these rules.
- At the end of your post you need to tag 8 people and include their names.
- Don’t forget to leave them a comment on their blog and tell them they’ve been tagged, and to come back and read your blog for the whole story.
- I don't eat chocolate. I'm not allergic, I just don't like it.
- I could eat at Taco Time for a week and not get sick of it. (I've come close a few times, too.)
- I have step-step-cousins. (My step-uncle has step-kids.)
- Whenever I go through the coins in my wallet I always make sure I have 4 quarters, 5 dimes, 5 nickels, and 5 pennies.
- I love reading biographies and historical fiction.
- I have an odd fascination with Tudor-era England.
- I can count the number of times I've been to a church service on one hand.
- I have a collection of glasses from holiday dinners my college held.
Hmm. I don't know who's done this meme and who hasn't so if you want to, pretend I tagged you. :-)
As skittlefish so wonderfully (and yes, a little embarrassingly) mentioned, today was my birthday. While I didn't cry if I wanted to, I did do what I wanted to. This year that consisted of going to "Harold & Kumar", procrastinating (big surprise), and going out to dinner. This is the first time in five years I've been home to celebrate my birthday and since my mom is out of town my dad and I didn't really do much to celebrate. Although, this is my family we're talking about and we usually don't celebrate birthdays until after they've happened. Case in point, my sister says she won't mail my present until sometime this week and I'm fairly certain my grandmother has no idea it's my birthday.
Anyway, as I said I went to "Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay" and while it wasn't as good as the first one, it was pretty funny. It was especially nice to see Rob Coddry again (and Ed Helms) - I've missed both of them since they left "The Daily Show". To be honest, it was almost worth the $7.75(!) I paid to see it just for the "Dark Knight" preview in front of the movie. (Which, why is that movie not coming out until July?) But yeah, "Harold & Kumar" was pretty good. And of course Neil Patrick Harris was - wait for it - legendary (or is that awesome?). I also kind of want to watch the first one again. If only I hadn't used up my free rentals on "The Hoax" and "Gone Baby Gone"... (and it was available on Hulu or Fancast)
It was totally amazing. I couldn't believe how well-preserved the statues, busts, etc. are. The only downside was that, thanks... read more
